ATLANTA, Ga. — In a tragic turn of events, a man in his early 20s has pled guilty to first-degree vehicular homicide in connection with the death of a Georgia State Trooper earlier this year, according to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office. This plea follows a high-speed chase that ended in the death of Trooper Jimmy Cenescar.

Gerson Danilo Ayala-Rodriguez, a Guatemala native, faced charges not only for vehicular homicide but also for reckless driving, speeding, and multiple violations related to driving without a license, insurance, and vehicle registration. As part of his sentencing, Ayala-Rodriguez will serve 17 years in prison followed by five years on probation.

Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson expressed the gravity of the situation: “We tragically lost a young State Trooper due to the defendant’s reckless actions. While the defendant has accepted responsibility, it cannot bring Trooper Cenescar back. We hope this case serves as a stark reminder to all drivers and motorcyclists to adhere strictly to traffic laws.”

Gwinnett County Chief Assistant DA John Melvin added, “This plea not only holds the defendant accountable but also provides some closure to Trooper Cenescar’s family and friends.

He was a cherished member of the Georgia State Patrol.” Trooper Cenescar, who had recently become engaged, had been pursuing Ayala-Rodriguez after he refused to pull over for speeding on I-85 N. During the ensuing chase, Ayala-Rodriguez, who was traveling at speeds of up to 140 mph, maneuvered through traffic, leading to a loss of control by Cenescar.

The patrol vehicle collided with a guardrail and plummeted down an embankment near Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, resulting in the Trooper’s death.

Ayala-Rodriguez’s uncle, Nery Enrique Ayala, expressed sorrow over the incident: “It’s heart-wrenching to see the impact on both the officer’s family and our own.

The loss is immense.” Melvin reflected on the case, noting the broader implications: “It’s a devastating situation, with a young man now facing a significant portion of his life in prison due to a moment of recklessness.”
