ATLANTA, Ga. – A high-stakes chase in an Atlanta neighborhood on Tuesday night culminated in a deputy shooting an armed suspect who had crashed a stolen vehicle. The incident occurred at the intersection of Harwell Road and Delmar Lane near I-285 in west Atlanta.
According to Fulton County Sheriff Patrick “Pat” Labat, the sequence of events began with a routine traffic stop. A deputy pulled over a vehicle and, upon running the license plates, discovered that it had been reported stolen from Decatur. The exact reason for the initial traffic stop was not disclosed.
Following the discovery, a chase ensued. The pursuit ended dramatically when the suspect, identified as 20-year-old Travon Yarborough, crashed the stolen car into a utility pole. Upon exiting the vehicle, Yarborough was holding a firearm and was subsequently shot by the deputy at least once.
Sheriff Labat reported that Yarborough was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive his injuries. Additionally, a woman who was in the vehicle with Yarborough was also transported to the hospital. Fortunately, no law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office has requested that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) take over the investigation into the shooting. The GBI routinely investigates any shooting incidents involving law enforcement officers to ensure an impartial and thorough review.
